Enterprise file share modernisation to Microsoft 365
Mapping path, link and permission risk before moving a legacy drive — so problems surfaced in the pilot, not at scale.
A legacy network drive had to move into a governed Microsoft 365 information architecture. Migrations of this kind tend to fail midway, when path limits, broken internal links or inconsistent permissions surface after the operation already depends on the destination.
The estate held deep folder structures, long paths, embedded links, mixed ownership and content that should not all move to the same destination. Because filenames were to be preserved, the destination architecture had to absorb the path risk rather than pass it to the user.
- Inventory and folder-structure analysis by business area
- Path checks against the 256-character local and 400-character OneDrive and SharePoint limits
- Fabric notebook for long-path analysis in a pilot area
- Destination SharePoint architecture design and archiving strategy
- Permission, link-dependency and internal-link remediation analysis
- Migration waves with runbooks, RACI, QA and a post-migration support model
The deliverable was an executable migration model rather than a generic recommendation: risks became visible before scale-up, the pilot could be validated ahead of expansion, and every department gained a defined route from discovery through to adoption.
